Though we have some very good clones of delavayi x pleianthum/versipelle that equal the many now out there (and which we sell, though we can’t produce many and so sell out of quickly), a few years ago we switched tactics and started to work with plants that, unlike delavayi, are more heat tolerant and actually don’t mind growing here in our hot, humid summer nights. We began with whatever ‘Kaleidescope’ and ‘Galaxy’ represent (we don’t believe the patent parentage claims) and added some special sauce, giving these a hybrid vigor that often has them from germination to flowering within a year. We’ve posted a couple of representative pics of prior generations, and please note that while they all bear some resemblance to these and to each other, these are seedlings and not clones. We will have clones of the best of prior years’ plants of these crosses in future, but as with so many of our plants, there will likely always be fewer than demand, and once these seedlings are gone, we won’t offer again (they were a pre-covid decision for in person sales). The tallest of these will hit 3’, though 24-30” is more usual, with foliage to 15-20” and typically sanguine flowers. Good soil in shade, and mulch the crowns for at least the first winter.
